The 2012 Super Bowl is in the books and I’m finally finished writing. Took me long enough. (I was distracted by Puppy Bowl VIII.) So without further ado, here’s the season’s last edition of The Final Drive!

It’s finally here. After a drawn-out lockout, a last minute deal, rushed training camps, an eventful regular season and a thrilling postseason, Super Bowl XLVI is upon us. On Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis the NFL’s elite will be decided. After breaking down the Patriots and Giants individually (as well as the Prop Bets), it’s time to actually analyze how this game is going to play out.

4 February 2012

After over 3000 words were spent on the Patriot and Giant previews, I needed to take a small break from the in-depth analysis for my favorite blog of the year: the Super Bowl Prop Bets. For those of you not in the betting zone, prop bets are side wagers on anything aside from the game’s final score or what team wins. There are some boring standards like first touchdown reception or most rushing yards, but there are plenty of non-sports related wagers in which to take part.

Following a dreadful loss to the lowly Washington Redskins to fall to 7-7 with only two games left, everyone had counted out the New York Giants.  That is, everyone except the Giants themselves, who kept their quiet confidence as they rolled off two victories to end the season and squeak into the fourth seed in the NFC. Then they mustered up two dominant performances as their defense shut out the Atlanta Falcons and stymied the 15-1 Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers. Now they find themselves in a familiar setting: in the biggest game of the year against the New England Patriots, whom I covered yesterday. Now the Giants are up in the rotation!

Shockingly enough, the supposedly ring-bearing Patriots haven’t won a Super Bowl since the 2004 season. As great as they have seemed in recent years, they’ve flopped when it comes to the postseason. This year has been different. They’re currently on a ten game win streak where they’ve avenged their horrible 2009 loss to the Ravens on their way to a rematch with the Giant team that stole their chance at immortality. In the first of my articles previewing Super Bowl XLVI, I’m breaking down the New England Patriots.

How many of you had to get an oxygen tank at some point today? These playoffs are been thrilling down to the wire in almost every game, and Conference Championship Sunday lived up to expectations. I have to say, I was skeptical that these four games could live up to the hype, especially after last weekend. But I’m happy to say I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. Well that didn’t take very long. After all of three days, Lovie Smith has found his next offensive coordinator. The big-time hire? Mike “Boat Show” Tice. (7-8) Chicago Bears at
(3-12) Minnesota Vikings

I am not going to waste your time with an in-depth analysis over a game without a crap-ton of starters on both sides of the ball. There’s a lot of “Joe Webb isn’t that bad” talk around the NFL, but I’m not totally sold. He’s probably a better option that Christian Ponder or Josh McCown though. But he’s missing Adrian Peterson, so you can’t totally rely on him this week. Chicago’s defense is the best unit in this game, and that typically goes a long way. The Odds:

Well it was a team effort today. It took all the Bears collectively failing in order to lose this in the fashion they did to Tyler Palko. The blame starts with the offensive play-calling, then shifts to the crappy play Caleb Hanie, veers towards horrible injuries and finishes with a pathetic showing from the offensive line. Week three was as crazy as possible, with two surprising 3-0 teams, another injury for Michael Vick and “facial reconstruction” for Mark Sanchez. Let’s get right into The Final Drive!

It wasn’t as consistently ugly as one might have expected, but the better team won as the Packers trounced the Bears at Soldier Field Sunday afternoon. Aaron Rodgers was surgical in his delivery, hitting tight end Jermichael Finley for three touchdowns en route to the 27-17 victory. It was a sloppy game for both sides, with penalties and turnovers a’plenty.

Nearly eight months removed from their collapse in the NFC Championship game, the Chicago Bears get a shot at (way less significant) revenge on Sunday when they welcome in the Green Bay Packers to Soldier Field. There’s no need to delve into the importance of this historic NFL rivalry, so let’s get right into the match-up’s created by the current rosters.

Oh what a let-down that was. In their second game, the Chicago Bears managed to flat-line against the Saints, getting their quarterback Jay-Roughed in the process. Chicago’s offense held serve with the high-powered offense for about a half, and then Sean Payton let loose the entire playbook, taking the Bear defense to school like a game of Madden.

Week one was insanely awesome. Can week two of the NFL season follow it up? We’ve got a shoot-out preparing in New England and Michael Vick night on Sunday Night Football. What else could you need? Here are some of the games to watch for in week two.

Following the much-heralded destruction of the Atlanta Falcons in week one, the Chicago Bears fly down to Louisiana to take on the New Orleans Saints. Many analysts have mentioned the Bears’ recent success against the Saints, but all of those contests have been in Chicago and typically in less than stellar conditions. This Sunday the Bears will be in the Superdome, where the Saints will clearly have the advantage. But do they have the advantage on the field? Let the dissection begin!

It was a complete victory at Soldier Field Sunday afternoon as the Bears dominated the visiting Atlanta Falcons 30 to 12. In a game where the Bears were underdogs, they sent an early message to the rest of the NFC, intimating that they will not be overlooked. Chicago took the NFC’s best team in 2010 and made them look sloppy and unpracticed.

It’s finally here. After lockouts, crazy free agency preseason games and everything else, the Chicago Bears are taking to Solider Field today for regular season action. They’re welcoming in the Atlanta Falcons, whose 13-3 record was the best in the NFC during 2010. Let’s get to some match-ups, shall we?

Now that I’ve broken down the team piece by piece ( offense, defense and special teams), it’s time for the predictions. This year I decided to analyze the schedule and put my predictions out there. Obviously it means little having barely seen the team, but it’s still fun to talk about. Here’s the schedule and a quick thought on each game:Week 1 vs. Atlanta

After previewing the offense in my last blog, the stalwart Bears defense and special teams are under the microscope. With such questions regarding the impending offensive output, these two phases can’t drop the ball in almost any game. (When is that going to end?) Let’s see if they have the talent to keep up the intensity.

Can you hear that? It sounds like the Bears are coming out of hibernation. After an offseason filled with drama surrounding the lockout, Jay Cutler, players unhappy with their contracts, new faces and crappy turf, the Chicago Bears are finally ready to take the field for regular season action. Before that happens, let’s preview each aspect of the team, starting with the offense.

There’s no way around it. This division sucks. Quarterback questions abound for three of its four teams and 9-7 will likely win it all. The final division preview starts now!Seattle Seahawks

The NFC East. Always a source of hype and drama, the division went topsy-turvy once again in 2010 as Michael Vick had an MVP-caliber season and the Cowboys fell off the face of the planet. Can the Eagles build off their impressive free agent class and make a Super Bowl run? Will Rex Grossman… not suck terribly in Washington? Are the Giants flying under the radar? I love this division. Let’s break it down.

7 September 2011

I was holding off on predicting this division as long as I could. With an injury sidelining Peyton Manning for an undetermined period of time, this division should be up in the air. However, there’s only one team in this division who has a returning starter under center in week one.

Likely the roughest division in the NFL, the AFC North has long been the stomping ground for Big Ben and the Steelers. Last season the Ravens fell short of dethroning the eventual AFC Champs and are looking to finally make it over that yellow and black speed-bump. Cincinnati  has overhauled key positions and look to rebuild while the Browns are slowly regaining traction in the division. The AFC North takes center stage!

Always a source of drama, the North collided in the NFC title game when the Packers overtook the Bears on route to their Super Bowl win. Can the Packers repeat as champs? Will Detroit finally take the next step forward? Can Donovan McNabb get the Vikings to the playoffs? This divisional preview is all Black and Blue!Chicago Bears

Perhaps the second-to-worst division in football (they should thank their NFC counterparts), the AFC West was turned upside down when the Chiefs stole the division away from the Chargers. Can they repeat or will San Diego return to form? With rebuilding years in Denver and Oakland, how much can we really expect? Let the near-meaningless analysis begin!

In one of the most competitive divisions in the NFL, the NFC South’s quarterbacks are all worth watching this season. Will Matt Ryan and the Falcons recover from their loss to Green Bay in the playoffs? Can Drew Brees get New Orleans back to the Super Bowl? In Tampa Bay, Josh Freeman is an up-and-coming star at quarterback, but is his supporting cast good enough? After beating out Jimmy Clausen for the starting job, is Cam Newton ready for the NFL spotlight? Your answers start here! Atlanta Falcons

Kicking off my eight division previews is the AFC East. Owned by the Patriots for so many years, the East’s postseason success has now been abducted by the New York Jets, who are hoping to take the division crown in the hopes of furthering their success past the AFC title game. In Miami, Tony Sparano is hoping Chad Henne can save his job while Buffalo is well… still Buffalo. Previews commence!New England Patriots

With teams trimming down their rosters to 53 this week, you knew there would be plenty of movement on the free agent front and a few surprises along the way. Even the Bears got themselves in the headlines for some key releases and one surprising but welcome addition.

And that’s a wrap folks! In their fourth and final preseason outing, the Bears took care of the Cleveland Browns 24-14. Taking their last looks at their roster before trimming it down, the Bear coaching staff has their work cut out for them. Here are my thoughts from tonight’s (still meaningless) win.

30 August 2011

In the last major week of preseason action for Chicago Bear starters, the signs of progress were clear. Even in a 14-13 loss to the Chris Johnson-less Titans, Bear fans finally saw a glimmer of hope for the coming season. Here are my takeaways from Saturday’s exhibition:

27 August 2011

In their third preseason game, which the media long ago dubbed the “dress rehearsal” for every team, the Chicago Bears have to show fans a small glimpse of the team that made it to the NFC title game last year. Wait, no it shouldn’t. That team wasn’t actually that great. What the Bears NEED to do tonight in Tennessee is show how far they’ve come with the new pieces they have in place and what this season could potentially resemble. Here’s what I’ll be looking for from tonight’s match-up with the Tennessee Titans.
