Let’s just get The Final Drive started.(11-6) Houston Texans 31
(9-8) Cincinnati Bengals 10

The first game of the weekend started off awfully sloppy, with plenty of penalties and “jitters” as described by Nessler and Mayock. As the game drew on though, the Texans clearly established themselves as the better team by man-handling Cincy. Rookie lineman J.J Watt, who has shown an inherent talent and awareness to deflect passes at the line of scrimmage made the play of a game by boomeranging Dalton in the second quarter. Watt timed his jump perfectly and made the catch and rambled 29 yards to paydirt. Then he sacked Dalton to end the first half as the Bengals were driving. It was hilarious afterwards to see Dalton with the “Why didn’t you tell me that lineman wasn’t actually fat? I never would have thrown it his way had I known” face. I blame the scouts on that one. The Bengals performance could be encapsulated with their second half opening drive: they were stopped on second down for a loss, then flagged for 12 men in the huddle, then Dalton wasted a time-out as he couldn’t hear the play-call in Reliant’s noise. Those wheels came off. Missed chances to take away the ball from Houston, poor tackling on defense allowed Houston to let Arian Foster loose and control to flow of the game. T.J. Yates never had to make a big play, so the Texans got the win.

(9-7) Cincinnati Bengals at
(10-6) Houston Texans
4:30 PM ET, NBC

As has become tradition in the NFL, the opening game of the Wildcard round is sorta… crappy. The Bengals are a slightly above average team that defied their lowly preseason expectations. Andy Dalton started strong as a rookie, but his production has certainly fallen off in recent weeks. A.J. Green will be healthy enough to make a difference, but I don’t think Dalton has enough developed talent around him to light up the scoreboard. Cedric Benson is a workhorse running back, but he’s never been explosive. Cincy’s offense is decent, but I’d give the edge to Houston’s defense in that match-up. They’re fast and aggressive and can slow down the Bengals enough to give their own rookie quarterback a chance.

The poor Bengals got swept for the Ravens and Steelers during the regular season. Luckily for Cincy they still got into the playoffs with some bungling by the teams beneath them and get to take on the banged-up Houston Texans. (Sorry Bryan, your team doesn’t get to lead The Final Drive by backing into the playoffs.) Baltimore wins their way into a first-round bye and (more importantly) a playoff home game for the first time in the Harbaugh era.(12-4) Pittsburgh Steelers 13

So maybe the Texans aren’t absolutely screwed with T.J. Yates at quarterback. Who knew? They probably won’t make a lot of noise in the playoffs depending on the seeding, but they should stay competitive. Unfortunately for Cincy, there may be too many “respectable losses” on their record.(10-3) New Orleans Saints 22

The Bengals have had two shots to make statements against the Ravens and Steelers but have failed to deliver. Ugh. The Bengals were so close again! Once more the Ravens played up to their competition, securing themselves a wildcard slot for the time being. I’m just not as impressed with them as I should be. After coming so close in their match-up with the Steelers last week, the Bengals get yet another opportunity to prove their worth in the AFC with a trip to Baltimore. Unfortunately, they’re catching the Ravens after their third unforgiveable loss of the season. Baltimore plays to the level of their opponents, so they should be more than geared up and ready for a tough divisional contest. While the Ravens will miss Ray Lewis in the middle of their defense, the Bengals will miss wide-out A.J. Green more. (5-4) Tennessee Titans at

so here are the 2011 Midseason Musings!

Offensive Rookie of the (Half) Year: Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals

It’s easy to say Cam Newton since he has some wicked stat lines, but Dalton’s getting it done for a 6-2 that NO ONE thought would be a contender.  He’s up over 60% in completions and has twelve scores and only seven picks on the season. Thanks to fellow rookie A.J. Green, Dalton has the trappings of a bona fide Rookie of the Year.

Tuesday the Cincinnati Bengals finally traded disgruntled quarterback Carson Palmer. The deal? Palmer goes to Oakland, who sends back a first round draft pick in 2012 and a conditional second round pick in 2013 that could turn into a first rounder if the Raiders make it to the AFC title game in the next two years. I’m not jumping on their bandwagon yet.
2010 Record: 5-11
2011 Prediction: 6-10

Cincinnati Bengals

So their once Pro Bowl caliber quarterback and receiver are either angrily retired or happily traded. So their obvious replacements? Rookies Andy Dalton and A.J. Green. Both are going to experience steep learning curves in the AFC North, facing great defenses in Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Dalton has been slow to progress in the preseason and needs to work on increasing his arm strength. His accuracy will eventually get to where it was in college, but the game still moves too fast for him. Green tops a really solid receiving corps with Andre Caldwell, Jerome Simpson and Jordan Shipley. Cedric Benson will keep plowing ahead for minimal gains, but at least Dalton can always turn around and hand it off. From their defense the Bengals are desperate for an improvement, giving up over 24 points a game in 2010. They signed Nate Clements to replace departing corner Jonathan Joseph, but it is a slight downgrade. Their pass defense won’t be as sure-handed and I’m failing to see from where a consistent pass rush is going to emerge.

The Positive

Cincinnati Bengals

Chad Johnson won’t be back? No problem. Draft A.J. Green. Carson Palmer wants out? Who cares? Draft Andy Dalton. Done and done. The Bengals managed to find capable (on paper anyways) replacements for exiting superstars. Green was clearly the top receiver in this draft, so skipping him wasn’t an option for a team with two likely departing receivers. Getting Dalton in the second round was a surprise, seeing how QB’s practically flew off the shelves in round one. What I love about Cincy’s draft is that they prepared for any eventuality with Palmer without stretching their resources. They let Dalton fall to them and then they snapped him up.

You’re fighting to get into the playoffs and you lose to freaking Cincinnati? How embarrassing. I’m honestly glad the Chargers didn’t get into the postseason. They don’t deserve it and I don’t want to hear every five minutes about they’re the “dark horse,” just to watch them crash and burn in the wild-card round. While the Bengals fought valiantly to take the lead late, their complete inability to run the ball or to stop Drew Brees at any point is the reason they dropped their tenth of the year. Right after seeing the Bengals wipe away his lead, Brees calmly stepped out on the field and marched it right down to the red zone, where Bengal DT Pat Sims decided to give him a gift by jumping off-sides on a fourth and two play that would have never been run. Dumb plays like that are why the Bengals aren’t going to the playoffs and why Marvin Lewis should get fired.

A rematch of last year’s playoff drubbing, the Jets have picked up where they left off while the Bengals are crumbling. Mark Sanchez is coming of age this season, leading late comebacks in the past three contests. Where questions lie is on the defensive side of the ball, since the Jets are starting to give up points in bunches. As bad as the Bengals are, they can put up points when they feel like it. The Dolphins finally found a few big plays on Sunday to help their surprisingly anemic offense. You'd think adding Brandon Marshall would mean you score more more than four field goals and one TD. Miami is following their typical formula for victory, but to beat the best in the AFC they'll need to continue airing it out. I'm keeping an eye on Cincy this week to see if they pick up Randy Moss off waivers. That would be an epically egotistical group of wide-outs. I would watch EVERY Bengal game. (Maybe.)

One of these teams is living up to the hype they garnered going into the year. Atlanta is balanced on both sides of the ball and has earned victories during a very tough opening schedule. Roddy White's 201 yards through the air secured a much-need win and some extra breathing room heading into their bye week. In Cincy, things are about to a'splode. So what's going on in Cincinnati? Everyone's AFC "Dark Horse" pick for the Super Bowl has fallen off the map in the AFC North, losing to a young Tampa squad. The offense's struggles have been well documented, with Carson Palmer tossing a pick-six in the second quarter of this loss. If the offense gives up points, it doesn't matter how good the defense is. Raheem Morris has his Bucs in the NFC South race, a place no one expected them to be.

Getting their bye week after being dominated by the Steelers, the Bucs are back to take on a Bengals squad desperate for a win to keep up in their division. Carson Palmer and the passing game broke out last week in a loss, but was that a one-bullet gun or can they fire a few more? Tampa Bay's weak secondary will entice Cincy to throw on almost every down. If they can move around Tampa's smaller defensive front, Cedric Benson could have a big day, but don't count on it. This'll be a close one.

It figures that after all the criticism, Carson Palmer's best game of the season comes in a loss. I'd say a majority of his 371 yards came as a result of being behind for most of the game, but that doesn't matter. The fact remains that he can do it if needs be. Terrell Owens' 222 yards receiving on ten receptions proves his worth as a Bengal. But let's give some credit to the Browns, who managed to jump out early and hang on for the win. Peyton Hillis's second-straight 100-yard game gives the Brown faithful hope.

Is your popcorn ready? No? What are you waiting for? In the AFC North, winning your division games isn't an easy task, but the Bengals managed to go 6-0 last season. That won't happen again, so racking up wins outside the north is paramount. In a definite surprise, the Bengals climbed the ranks behind a great defense and running attack to take the AFC North crown. A long way from his elite years of the past, it wasn't Carson Palmer at his best, but in his defense he was extremely low on weapons. That won't be the case this year. In addition to Chad Ochocinco (I fee lame for typing that), the Bengals signed Terrell Owens, who seems to have some speed left. They drafted slot receiver Jordan Shipley and pass-catching tight end Jermain Gresham. The line is big and physical, but they need to protect Palmer better to bring him back to glory. Cedric Benson looks revitalized in Cincy *grumble* and Bernard Scott brings some quickness off the bench.

The New York Jets suppressed the home team Cincinnati Bengals Saturday in a 24-14 victory, despite giving up 171 yards on the ground.

After being shut out last week, the Bengals took advantage of early field position to take a 7-0 lead off a Carson Palmer pass to Laveranues Coles in the endzone. From there it was all Jets. Rookie QB Mark Sanchez completed 12 of his 15 passes for 182 yards, including a well-called bootleg where he found tight end Dustin Keller for 45 yards and a score. Sanchez was backed-up by 164 combined yards on the ground from rookie back Shonn Greene and veteran Thomas Jones. Most importantly, Sanchez didn't turn the ball over.

(6-2) Cincinnati Bengals 17
(4-4) Baltimore Ravens 7

So the Bengals are 4-0 in their division. Who saw that coming? Joe Flacco was less than his usual efficient self while Carson Palmer aired it out enough to win. The real difference maker was the running game. Baltimore’s Ray Rice only carried the ball 12 times for 48 yards while Cedric Benson garnered 117 yards on 34 carries. Benson definitely grinded it out, but he’s had two 100+ yard rushing days against the Ravens defense. That can’t be ignored. Also hard to miss is that Bengals defense. Yikes.

ld you be watching? Find out in the Opening Drive of week nine!

(4-3) Baltimore Ravens at (5-2) Cincinnati Bengals

With the Ravens, Bengals and Steelers all making a case for their place atop the AFC North, this game will go a long way in deciding the final two. If Baltimore is swept by Cincinnati, they’ll drop back to .500 while the Bengals and Steelers fight it out. The Ravens dominated Denver in the second half of last week’s game, thanks to Joe Flacco’s efficiency with the football. He’ll need a repeat performance if he’s going to keep up with Carson Palmer, who is playing on a Pro Bowl level. Both offenses have depending on a balanced attack, so look for each defense to shut down the run.

I won’t punish you by going over every thing the Bears did wrong on Sunday. I don’t have that much time to write and I already punished myself by watching the game off my DVR after having heard the slaughter on the radio Sunday. Instead, let me explain what you can learn from their 45-10 beatdown at the hands of Carson Palmer, Cedric "holding a grudge" Benson and the Bengals.

24 October 2009

At 3-2, my Chicago Bears are in better shape than I would have predicted going into the season. That being said, I’ll still be upset if they lose in Cincinnati Sunday afternoon. Despite holding a lead in the AFC North, the Bengals are a beatable team. Let’s get right down to it in my Gameday Preview!

The Final Drive of week six starts right now!

(3-3) Houston Texans 28
(4-2) Cincinnati Bengals 17

Every once in a while, Houston goes ballistic and puts up mega-points. Matt Schaub once again proves he’s a fantastic fantasy QB… five games a season. The Bengals aren’t an elite team, so you had to expect a letdown eventually after winning four straight. Now they dropped back with Pittsburgh, who are also 4-2, but technically behind since the Bengals beat them head-to-head.

Welcome out of the loser’s club Carolina.

(4-1) Cincinnati Bengals 17
(3-2) Baltimore Ravens 14

The Ravens may have cost themselves some opportunities with awfully-timed penalties, but make no mistake, the Bengals won this game on their own. They are legit and in control of that division. Carson Palmer should be back on his way to the cream of the quarterback crop.

Let’s get things going with the most anticipated games of week four!

Cincinnati Bengals (3-1) at Baltimore Ravens (3-1)

While it’s way too early for the winner of this game to be named AFC North champion, it will give one team a sizeable advantage. If the Bengals can pull off the victory, there will be no questions as to their legitimacy. Unfortunately, they’re facing a Ravens squad that is fuming after their loss to the Patriots last week. Ray Lewis and that swarming defense will try to make a statement at the expense of their division rival.

Week four Opening Drive commence!

Cincinnati Bengals (2-1) at Cleveland Browns (0-3)

Can you imagine the Bengals sitting in the driver’s seat in the AFC North at 3-1? Since they’re facing off against the offensively-challenged Browns, that’s becoming an extremely likely scenario. I don’t think anyone in Cincinnati could have imagined a better start in their zaniest dreams. Great job to Marvin Lewis and a defense that has been rightfully much-maligned over the years. Carson Palmer is as close to 100% as we’ve seen since his injury. Cleveland is still awful. Sorry. The players hate Eric Mangini and he can't stand firm on a quarterback for more than six minutes. Derek Anderson may be starting this week, but I don't think Brady Quinn will stay on the sidelines all season.

28 September 2009

Now that’s impressive.

(2-1) Cincinnati Bengals 23
(1-2) Pittsburgh Steelers 20

Easily the biggest surprise of the weekend. Carson Palmer led a comeback drive late to put his Bengals at 2-1. Without that freaky play in week one, they would be 3-0. Think about it. It’s painfully obvious that the Steelers are not the same without Troy Polamalu and can’t simply rely on Ben Roethlisberger to drop back all day.

I’d call that an improvement.

(1-1) Cincinnati Bengals   31
(1-1) Green Bay Packers   24

HA! That’s just embarrassing for Green Bay fans. You take down your division rival in week one just to fall to the lowly Bengals the next week. Carson Palmer hasn’t been himself for a few years; maybe this is the season he can get back on track as being one of the best QB’s in football.

That’s not an offense Eric.

Denver Broncos 12, Cincinnati Bengals 7

In the most outrageous and unbelievable ending I’ve ever seen, Josh McDaniels and his Broncos escaped Cincinnati with a victory. With less than 30 seconds left, a Kyle Orton pass from the 13 was tipped in the air and landed in the hands of a lucky Brandon Stokley who took it 87 yards for the winning score. They’re still going to be pretty bad, but there’s one highlight for the Bronco season.

12 August 2009

It's that time of year again folks. Time to start predicting the unpredictable. Will any of the Denver Broncos running backs get enough carries to warrant a spot on your roster? Can Michael Turner replicate last season's performance and warrant the second overall pick in your draft? What will Terrell Owens's numbers look like now that he is in Buffalo? And how does that impact Trent Edwards value as the Bills' QB? Who am I taking if I get the first pick? What if I get stuck at the end of the first round? Do I snatch up two running backs? Or should I go one running back and also nab a top tier receiver?

7 October 2008

This wasn’t supposed to be a game. This shouldn’t have even been competitive. Dallas was supposed to walk all over the bumbling Bengals. Instead, Cincinnati had a chance to win this game late and possibly hand a second loss to the mega-talented Cowboys.  Unfortunately Cincinnati remembered who they are and fumbled away their chance for victory.

Cleveland Browns (0-3) at Cincinnati Bengals (0-3)

Last week we had the Pennsylvania Bowl in the NFL, featuring two great teams. It’s too bad for Ohio that both of their teams are just plain bad. Each of these squads is looking to step on the other as they climb out of the trash heap of winless teams. If Derek Anderson is going to hold off the Brady Quinn chants, he’ll have to beat the hapless Bengals. He won’t be able to do it alone though, as Braylon Edwards needs to stop dropping every ball that comes his way. Cincinnati isn’t looking to be pushed over either, as they offered stuff opposition to the Super Bowl Champ New York Giants last week, forcing overtime. Carson Palmer will be hungry in this game, and a Palmer-led offense can put up 40 on any given Sunday.
