Lakers: Clearly the Western Conference's best team this season.

Last night, I watched more than half of the Lakers versus Suns game.  For much of the first half, it managed to be a close game.  However, the Lakers' superior talent, energy, and ability to play as a team was evident.  The game became a blowout during the second half.  At one point, the Lakers pulled ahead 89-71.

Here are some of my observations from the game.  First, the Lakers' transition game is much strong than that of the Suns.  They scored on fast breaks much more often, while the Suns rarely got it going in the open court.

Second, Steve Nash is not the player he use to be.  This game was a prime example, as the Laker defense kept him from getting too involved.  He did not score much, and his ten assists did not help the Suns much.

In addition, the Laker bench is stronger than that of the Suns, outscoring them 43-30.

The Suns, like all other NBA teams, are just not as good as the Lakers.  The Lakers are a sure bet to repeat as Western Conference Champions.  If they stay healthy, I would go so far as to say that they will win it all in 2009.

Yes, Detroit beat them last Friday.  However, if the Lakers are healthy come playoff time, they will not lose four games to Detroit, Boston or anyother team.  Their team is just too complete, Kobe Bryant is too determined and Phil Jackson wants to pass Red Auerbach for most championchips of all time for NBA coaches.

I'm not saying they'll win 70, but I think this team would even give the 1997-1998 Bulls a run for their money.  Jordan Farmar and Sasha Vujacic would be good starting point guards, and they're both on the Laker bench!  So are Lamar Odom, Luke Walton and Trevor Ariza.

With all due respect to fans of the Rockets, Suns, Nuggets, Jazz, and Spurs, these teams will all be playing for second place in the West.  I dare them to prove me wrong.  It is early in the season, so let's see what happens.

Keywords: Los Angeles Lakers; game verus Suns; best in the west
